Qualitative Analysis
SAP Company History
SAP is the largest software company outside of America and ranks number three in the world in terms of revenues in its industry. In Fiscal Year 2020, SAP reported 27.3 billion EUR in revenues. Currently, the company employs some 102,000 staff across the globe. SAP is a leading global provider of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) solutions. In total, the German software powerhouse has 425,000 global customers. Among those are many of the worlds largest enterprises with Google only being the most recent example of choosing SAP as their vendor.
In 1972, five former IBM employees founded SAP as a private company in Germany. They developed a software that was able to execute simple payroll and accounting operations on mainframe computers. Prior to this breakthrough development, those operations were mainly executed manually and mechanically. With its entirely new approach SAP was one of the first companies to leverage keyboard and display interactions. This development basically marks the birth of the Finance module (also referred to as SAP R/1). From then onwards, SAP continuously improved and extended the Software with additional modules and functionalities (e.g. Material Management, Purchasing and Invoicing). Starting with R/1 in 1973, SAP released R/2 in 1982. In 1991 the company released R/3, which is nowadays referred to as SAP ERP.
In 2014, SAP published its current flagship product, SAP S/4HANA. S/4HANA is also available as a Cloud version. It can be seen as SAP’s first response to meet the requirements of a new digital era. The solution is also designed to be future ready and support customers on their digital transformation journeys. Since the release of S/4HANA, the company is in a continuous shift to satisfy customer demands in a digital world. Among others, the software company focusses its initiatives on the Internet of Things (IoT), Embedded Intelligence, Business Analytics as well as Machine Learning capabilities.
